Are you struggling to pay your mortgage?

Don’t panic, we’re here to help!

What’s available?

These are unprecedented times for absolutely everyone, everywhere! We are all having to change the way we live, work and generally function. This is true of individuals and businesses alike.

The mortgage market is no exception and like every other industry, it has been completely shaken up.

What has been acknowledged by the lenders is a great number of households are struggling to make their mortgage payments, that food and other bill priorities such as utilities mean it may not be possible. Therefore, if this is true of your situation then a three-month mortgage payment holiday is available.

On 17 March, banks agreed with the Chancellor that they will offer ‘forbearance’ (tolerance and help) on mortgages. Allowing customers a temporary break from having to make mortgage payments during this period.

It is important to understand that this is not compulsory for lenders to offer mortgage holidays, but the pressure placed on them means they are willing to listen and likely agree to one if your circumstances fit their criteria.

How can I apply?

This can be arranged both on the phone and online. However, the vast majority of households that we have spoken to have experienced nightmare waiting times on the phone, with the lenders hugely backlogged and understaffed – latest figures from UK Finance show that 1.6 million customers have taken a payment holiday since the coronavirus crisis began. That’s one in seven of all mortgages in the UK.

If they accept, will I be charged interest?

Unfortunately, yes, you will still be charged interest. The good news, or should we say the silver lining in this critical situation, is it’s added to the total cost. So, just to clarify, if you take a mortgage holiday you WILL:

Still, be charged interest for the time you’re not making payments.
You won’t have to pay it back immediately.
It will be added on to the total cost of your mortgage and factored into repayments (when you start precisely will be determined by the bank).
